Biography
Kalibala began her education at Victoria Nile in Jinja, before moving on to Bugema Adventist, Rubaga Girls School and later Makerere Business School to study Business Administration. Priscilla has always taken on other work in addition to her music career, and is interested in production aspects of the music business as well as architecture and fashion coordinating. In fact, she used to work with the Paparrazzi Modelling Agency (later to become Sylvia Owori's Ziper Models) when her music career was just getting off the ground.
Career
Bursting onto the Ugandan music scene in a big way with her successful G-Power show in 2005, Priscilla Kalibala had already been treating appreciative audiences to her catchy afro-beat melodies for several years prior to that, and has a loyal fan base to prove it. They have been known to follow her to as far away as Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to take in her dynamic, dance-infused performances. She tells us more about herself.....
"I'm a just a humble and happy girl who loves to sing," she explains. "Interaction with the audience is really why I perform .... when they shout, dance and have fun because of what I'm singing, it's a very rewarding experience." Kalibala's strong and versatile voice allows her to handle everything from Afro Pop and Dancehall to Zouk and Kwaito. Clear and pure, or rich and resonant, Priscilla is able to reach, and convey, the very soul of her songs to the audience. Her own life experiences have given her valuable insight into the emotions which sound so compelling when she sings.
Becoming involved with music as far back as Nursery School where she was a lead singer, Kalibala first joined school choirs and then dance groups in her secondary school days, performing in public at various school functions. She would later go on to sing karaoke on Saturday nights at Sabrina’s Pub, usually covering songs by her favourite singing idol Whitney Houston, and as a result of her fine performances there she met Robert Segawa who took her to Tagy Studios where she taped the first version of her future hit song Gumikiriza. Although she never released that recording, she later hooked up with Joe Tabula who rearranged the music, and together with Priscillar's polished vocals Gumikiriza went on to become a fan favourite, earning plenty of airtime on local radio stations. With that success she has never looked back, and soon afterwards she launched her first album Mwana Gwe, which was also produced by Joe Tabula. Never one who is afraid to experiment, Kalibala also employed producers such as Eric Musyoka of Homeboyz Studios in Nairobi and Henry Kiwuwa of No End Studios to add further dimension to her repertoire. Popular songs from her Mwana Gwe album include the title track, plus the spiritual Let's Pray For Africa and the exuberant party hit Dancing. The music on the album was written by Joseph Patrick, Joe Tabula, Goodenuf and lastly, Tickie -Tah.
Priscilla describes Mwana Gwe as a song about a girl who is praising her man, "I always strive to sing about topics which deeply move me, to really bring my emotions out in the performance." If Mwana Gwe needs explaining, look no further than the video which absolutely smolders with sexuality. It isn't difficult to understand what this energetic girl is singing about on her club hit Dancing either. Smiling, Kalibala says of the song "For me, Dancing is all about the anticipation before a night out clubbing with my girlfriends, that feeling of excitement for what is yet to come, and the great feeling you get when partying with people you really like to be with. It's simply a song about having fun." Her most famous track, Gumikiriza, is an emotional plea from a young woman who is imploring her man to remain patient and faithful to her, to come back to her even though he is out of sight and far away. The song puts a twist on an old expression by suggesting “Out of sight is NOT out of mind”, and Gumikiriza certainly struck a chord with Kampala audiences; it cemented Kalibala's well-earned reputation as one of Uganda's most talented and promising artistes. These days Priscilla is asked to perform at nearly every album launch, street bash or beach party. That is not to say that she doesn't have a strong sense of social responsibility however. In 2006 Kalibala travelled to Gulu with Angella Katatumba's mission to assist families suffering in the war-torn Northern region, and more recently she sang on the Don't Give Up album to help bring attention to the HIV/Aids epidemic. "I have always felt deep empathy for those less fortunate than myself" she explains. "It is very easy to dwell on your own situation and to think about how things could be better for you, but after seeing hungry children in the North and the despair of innocent HIV/Aids victims, it really put my own life into perspective. If I can help out others simply by doing what I love to do, then it's my responsibility as an artiste to do so." In the future, she would like to establish a means of assistance to help orphaned street children.
Presently, Priscilla is about to release a new 9 track album consisting of songs written by top writers such as Silver Kyagulanyi and Joe Tabula, due out in September, 2007. One of the songs on that album is her chart-busting hit Nakwagala Dda which showcases the attractive singer's maturity and depth of talent by being both energetic and soulful at the same time. And Jetwasokella, her hit duet with Qute Kaye, has already been taking audiences by storm for nearly a year now. And her current radio hit Tukyuse Mwami has Kalibala fondly appreciating a man who has remained as true to his woman today as he was on the first day they met, her soulful voice simply oozing with heartfelt emotion. Stay tuned for news of her upcoming launch in late September which is sure to be a can't-miss event of 2007. Priscilla is looking forward to excursions to London and the USA later in the year to singing for impatient ex-pat Ugandan audiences who have been clamouring to see her live on stage.
Kalibala has also recorded vocal material for the soon-to-be-released film "Battle of the Souls", so her talent hasn't gone un-noticed in the movie world either! With a successful album out, a new one on the way, a string of hits already familiar to afro-pop fans all over East Africa, and her dynamic dance-infused performances which never fail to move her audience to their feet, movie soundtrack credits and great looks, Priscillar is definitely an artiste on her way up. Waaay way up! She advises young artistes who have the talent not to sit on it, but to continue working hard and have faith in themselves in order to realize their dreams. With her impressive string of successes, we assume that Priscillar Kalibala must be smiling in her sl
