"The 6th cycle of the 1980s" as the Smooth Poet himself would put it, saw the birth of Sagwe "S.Dizzy the Smooth Poet" Ogoti. He is the 2nd of three children, his elder brother ahead of him by 2 yrs and his younger sister, behind by 4yrs. S.Dizzy was born and raised in the city of Nairobi, Kenya. Located on the shores of East Africa right by the Equator. At an early age, he developed a fondness for music as he was born into a musically inclined family. His Father and his siblings being children to a Pastor, engaged in ministry through music. As he grew up, he sang with his brother and father, cousins and uncles and the larger extended family.
At the tender age of eleven, he stumbled across poetry, penning down his thoughts, what he saw around him and writing songs. Smooth P soon got dubbed "silk", "ladies-man", "dizzy" but to name a few by his peers. Throughout his teenage years, he developed a liking for Hip-Hop with close attention to the likes of Tupac Amaru Shakur, Nasir Jones, Christopher Wallace, & Sean Carter.
At the age of 16, his poetry took the form of "mediocre" bars and by 17, he laid down his first 16 with Carl "CCM" Mbao on the track "Gemini" that was produced by Wamya "Phamone" Tembo. As the hands of time ticked on, he developed his flow which he earnestly hones and got more complex with his lyricism by blending his poetic abilities to merge with his rap lyrics, which makes him stand out whenever he held a mic in front of masses, or for the love of it at cyphers and house-parties.
In 2006, he met Andre “Lyrics” Grant of Rexdale, Toronto. They spent most weekends passing the mic back and forth free-styling to instrumentals and before long, the two got better with lyricism and flow. A year later, in the fall off Sept '07 he and “Lyrics” teamed with Warlum “One” Bah to form the formidable trio “Spliff Section”. The trio’s popularity grew quick within the city of St.John’s teens and tweens alike, performing at the university bar “MUNSU Breezeway” on Open Mic Wednesdays, local clubs; “Konfusion” for Damon “Jokez” Fieldz memorial, “Roxxy’s”, “Rockhouse”, “Distortion”, “Turner’s Tavern” but to name a few.
In 2008, the trio signed a deal with 110 records and S.Dizzy recorded and released his debut album “EMOTIONS”; giving him the opportunity to work with local artists such as Maggie Meyer, Roma Grezlak, Jamie “Pierce One” Piercey & Andrew “Live” Lahey of the trio Large, Live ‘N Direct.
Since the album he has done shows all around the city extending his portfolio of work with the likes as Liam “Lee Fitz” Fitzgerald of Downstream, Riley “The Rit” Fitzgerald, Solid Gritty, Nate “Young Blood” Doucette, Kenneth “Krow” Greycloud and many more. The trio has since then branched and gone independent.
At present, the trio has split to pursue different and personal ventures, with Smooth Poet set to release an EP and a theatrical mix tape series M.V.P ‘Most Verbally Profound” Vol. I, II & III - prequel, sequel & grand finale respectively. Also lined up for the catalog is his sophomore album ineptly entitled, “Experience” whose date of release is to be determined. Keep it locked on the poet. Peace & Love to all!
