Music food for soul, music medicine of the heart music all
over the universe. My name is herbalist. Started doing music in high school as
a subject. I remember I never wanted to do it. My father was a guitarist and my
late brother since before I can remember he was so into music rapping as well
as writing. My mother has always been in church choir since I can remember.
I started the interest of being a producer/ recording and
performing artist back in 1999. My brother had asked me and my boys back then
in school to try enter into competitions so as to get a recording deal with a
studio. But that never happened. Even at one time we were conned by a producer
and never got our songs out. That’s when a close friend of mine Maichblaq and I
decided to open our own thing once we finished high school. We attended real
music school in Nairobi and got
some experience from Ogopa Djs when we went to record our two songs.
After a while in 2002 we started trying out our own things
and eventually had our own mini studio which we named herbal records. We
released such hits as pepea which was used as a rugby chant till late 2005 as
well as sababu yako by Maichblaq and geedruff, chacha by krupt and syd, mambo
kombo by nyota ndogo, among others. We gained much recognition that Ogopa asked
us to help them in some contract jobs but that ended in a media scandal that
Ogopa had bought us so we cancelled the contract. Later in 2003 Maichblaq and I
split to try it our own individually and this got me disrupted after the death
of my late brother. In 2004 thru to 2005 I stayed down low recording my own
songs and enhancing my own skills in production, going for production crush
courses outside but never actually released any major work out. Then end 2005 I
got a contract job working in Tanzania as a sound engineer for JAG records
owned by Gardner Habash and his wife Lady Jaydee, a renowned artist in
Tanzania. This contract lasted till November of 2006 during the time in which I
did a full album for the Tanzania
house of talent owned by Ruge mutahaba, and produced kora award nominees like Banana
Zorro and E – smah among other works.
I came back to Kenya
and in 2007 February was recalled back to Tanzania
for another contract in another studio called studio 69 owned by Kinje Mwiru.
This lasted till end 2007 where I decided to come back to Kenya and pursue
reviving our own record house and so Maichblaq and I met up to revive herbal
and its artists. Currently we have artists like Choku and Rat-a-tat, K – tisa,
Geedruff amongst others whom we are working with. We have started getting big
projects and we have established a much bigger company that should be fully
functional by late next year called Mashariki Entertainment. This deals with
artist management, audio and video production, cloth Line Company, and many
other small investments. Never going back never giving up. That is the
principle that I stand by daily. It has been hard but it has been rewarding in
its own ways.
